The biggest package of bus service changes in Newbury for many years is announced today by Newbury Buses.
It is the largest-ever single investment in new bus services since Newbury Buses took over the operation in 1992 and includes the recruitment of seven more drivers and increasing the fleet of buses by two.
The changes, which will see a 15 minute frequency on the Newbury-Reading corridor during the morning and evening Monday to Friday peaks, are wide ranging.
Said Newbury Buses Manager Norman Fryer-Saxby: “We are confident that the comprehensive package of measures we are introducing will encourage more people to travel by bus and we anticipate growth similar to that experienced in Reading in recent years.
“We are also revising our ticket purchasing options so that our products are more attractive and offer the best possible value for money.”
He announced that in conjunction with West Berkshire Council services operating between Newbury and Thatcham will be supported by improved bus stop shelters that will incorporate ‘real time’ information.
“This will give customers a countdown in minutes to the arrival of their next bus. It is a pilot project funded by the local authority and is similar to the system seen in Reading,” said Mr. Fryer-Saxby.
Changes will be made to the layout of Newbury bus station which will indicate revised departure points and an improved information display for the new services.
He revealed that recruitment was currently taking place with a number of trainees passing through the Reading Transport Limited (RTL) Academy. This will bring Newbury Buses’ complement of service drivers to 45.
Currently, Newbury Buses require 14 vehicles to operate services in the peak times and from April 20 the fleet will increase to 16.
