Long walks in the country, picnics in the wood, daytrips to the beach, lunch at the pub; all are hallmarks of the great British summer, but they are all also great opportunities for thieves!
With summer just around the corner, there is a tendency to become complacent when it comes to car security. How often have you left your car window open during a hot day while you ‘nip’ into the local shop? This could be just the kind of opportunity a thief needs to spoil your summer.
With the longer days approaching, Thames Valley Police are encouraging motorists to be extra vigilant, and are issuing warnings to take extra care especially now the temperatures are rising.
“It is when we let our guard down that we are at our most vulnerable. Our advice is common sense really, but we find that during the warmer weather it is easy to forget and adopt a carefree attitude. People can become complacent when it comes to car security” says Crime Reduction Advisor Jayne Taylor.
“Don’t leave any items on display – always take them with you when you leave your car, and if you can’t, then lock them in the boot, out of sight.”
Jayne adds: “Sat Navs– and their mounting cables – are a particularly tempting target for thieves. Always take valuable items like this with you, and be sure to wipe away any suction cup marks from the windscreen.”
Thames Valley Police recommends that you:
- Never leave valuables on display in your car
- Don't leave personal items in your glove box – leave it open to show that there's nothing in there
- Keep your car keys safe. Don’t leave them inside your car or in the ignition.
- Once home put your keys in a safe place out of sight of letterboxes and windows
- Make sure that your car is totally locked – doors, windows, and sun roof
- Store your car in a garage if possible, or try to park in a well-lit, open place
- If you park on the street, put your car aerial down and fold in the wing mirrors.
