Newbury Berkshire: Make sure your SORN vehicle is secure – West Berkshire

Make sure your SORN vehicle is secure – West Berkshire

Police are warning motorists in West Berkshire who have vehicles that are kept off the road under the Statutory Off Road Notification (SORN) scheme, to ensure that they are secure.

The warning follows a recent spate of five thefts of this type of vehicle in the area.

Insp Malcolm Whitaker, who is leading the investigation, said: “The offender seems to be targeting older cars that are being kept off road.

“It could be that the owners are waiting to scrap them, sell them on, or they could be undertaking some substantial repairs.

“The owners need to make sure that these vehicles are secure and I would recommend that people invest in a steering lock in addition to an existing security.”

Police believe that a white Ford Transit pick-up truck is being used in the thefts. It has an orange light on the roof, twin spotlights and bull bars on the front.

Insp Whitaker said: “It is certainly a very distinctive vehicle and I want to hear from anyone who has seen the driver acting suspiciously in the past few weeks.”

Anyone with any information about this vehicle should contact police via 0845 8 505 505.
