Shoppers and other visitors using council car parks throughout West Berkshire will now find it even easier to park. West Berkshire Council is introducing a 'pay by mobile phone' option in all its car parks, so for those with a mobile phone - and no change in their pockets - this a highly convenient option.
Of course, payment can still be made using cash, notes, or debit or credit cards in the five pay-on-foot car parks.
West Berkshire was the first Council in the UK to introduce pay by mobile phone parking - that was in October 2005. The new Council scheme marks the first introduction in the UK of such a system that is also compatible with pay-on-foot car parks.
The new system is being introduced during April, and is simple for drivers to set up and very easy to use. Drivers first need to register by calling (01635) 730730 with credit or debit card details and a car registration number. Payment for parking can then be made by calling or texting the local-rate number each time a vehicle is parked, and following the voicemail instructions.
West Berkshire Executive Councillor Emma Webster said: "There's always plenty of parking in Newbury and elsewhere in the district, and charges are the same or lower than most neighbouring areas. Being able to pay by phone is another excellent reason for making, for example Newbury, your chosen shopping destination.
"It means no more searching for loose change, no more looking for pay stations, and no need to display a ticket in your car. There is even the option of receiving text reminders before your parking fee expires, so you can extend your parking by phone wherever you are."
The new hi-tech system has been secured from market leaders Verrus UK.
