Newbury Berkshire: Schools and Colleges in West Berkshire urged to sign up for road safety event

Schools and Colleges in West Berkshire urged to sign up for road safety event

West Berkshire Council's road safety team is urging schools, colleges and apprentice training schemes in the District to sign up early for this year's Safe Drive, Stay Alive event.

The hard-hitting live stage production is aimed at young people between 16 and 19. It spells out the consequences of poor driving using a real-life scenario and testimony from victims, their families and members of the emergency services.

The production is based around a reconstruction of a road accident. It traces the events leading up to the collision and then shows the actions of the emergency services in dealing with it. Some of the most poignant messages from the show come from the parents who have lost a teenager or someone who has been disabled by the actions of a young driver.

Last year around 1,600 young people attended the event from a number of schools, colleges and apprentice training schemes in the District and organisers are hoping it will prove even more popular this time.

Graham Pask, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Safer and Stronger Communities said: "I hope that all of the secondary schools in West Berkshire will consider signing up for this production. Road death is the single biggest killer of young people in the UK and a hard-hitting show like this should make a big difference in trying to reduce that number."

The 'Safe Drive, Stay Alive' production is organised in partnership between the emergency services and local highways authorities. This year's event takes place at The Madejski Stadium Conference Centre in Reading on 23rd, 24th and 25th November.
