Newbury Berkshire: The Castle School provides a good standard of education according to Inspectors

The Castle School provides a good standard of education according to Inspectors

The Castle Special School in Newbury has received a very positive report, following a recent visit by inspectors from Ofsted . . .

Teaching was found to be good overall with pupils making successful progress in their academic and personal skills. Achievement was found to be monitored carefully and regularly which helps staff to set individual targets for improvement.

Inspectors also found that both the provision for the youngest pupils and those in the 6th Form is good with many children joining the school at an early age and staying until the age of 16.

The report also says that the curriculum is "appropriate to pupils' needs" and "good consideration is given to the particular needs and demands of pupils with autism."

Inspectors made some recommendations for further improvement including more consistent use of signing and symbols although the report indicates that the School's status as a specialist college for communication and interaction has helped to focus work in this area.

Headteacher at The Castle School, Kerry Gray said: "'I am very pleased that Ofsted have recognised The Castle School as a good school. This is due to the hard work of all the staff and to the wide range of training that is provided to support our pupils needs well.'

Barbara Alexander, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Children and Young People said: "The results of this inspection are especially good considering the complex needs of many of the pupils at The Castle School. It is also pleasing that the School's new status as a specialist college is seen by inspectors as a positive step to improve even further."
