West Berkshire Council is marking the start of this year's National Walk to School Week with the launch of the latest in a series of walking maps covering Theale and Calcot . . .
The map shows a network of walking routes and shortcuts in and around the area. It is designed to encourage everyone to walk more and use the car less when travelling short distances.
On the back of the map there is work called 'As the Red Kite Flies' which has been developed by children from Theale Primary School, Calcot Infant and Junior Schools and Kennet Valley Primary School. The children have created their own map which shows walking routes to the local schools. Police Community Support Officers (PCSOs) were also involved in the development of this map helping them to build relationships with the children.
The map is being launched as part of this year's National Walk to School Week which begins on the 18th May. The theme of this year's event is 'Walk n Talk' which focuses on the social benefits of walking to school.
Barbara Alexander, West Berkshire Executive Councillor for Children and Young People said: "This new walking map is a great way to start this year's Walk to School Week. I am pleased to see a new addition to our successful series of maps and the children's own design of a map showing walking routes to local schools will prove useful."
46 primary schools in West Berkshire are taking part in the event and pupils will be given an activity diary to complete during the week and collect stickers for the number of days they've walked. At the end of the week a bookmark promoting walking to school and a certificate will be presented to those children who have walked to school. Within the School posters and sticker charts are used as an inter class competition to see which class walks the most.
The Theale and Calcot Walking map has been developed as a joint venture between the Community Council for Berkshire and West Berkshire Council working together with local people as part of the West Berkshire Partnership.
Ray Clayton, Graham Smith, Alan Pears and Colin Dibb from the Pang Valley Group of the Ramblers Association have been working hard walking the streets of Theale and Calcot to deliver the new Walking in Theale and Calcot Map.
The map can be found on the Council website or by calling the Council on (01635) 519505.
